Spring Branch

SPRING BRANCH

Once little more than a pass-through between the larger, more populated cities of New Braunfels and Fredericksburg, the Spring Branch of today is a favorite spot of those seeking to build custom homes in a small but thriving Hill Country town.

Location

Spring Branch is in Comal County adjacent to Bulverde and bordering the Guadalupe River. It is located just 16 miles from San Antonio and 21 miles northwest of New Braunfels in the hills of western Comal County.

History

Settled by German colonists in 1845, Spring Branch was named for a spring that flows into the Guadalupe River. The city’s first post office opened in 1858, but population numbered just 25 for most of the 20th century. That number rose to 200 by 1990, aided by the completion of Canyon Dam and Canyon Lake.

Favorite places

Live music, traditional Texas hangouts, and beautiful natural spots fill Spring Branch with promise. Guadalupe River State Park offers four miles of river frontage and is a haven for outdoor activities such as canoeing, fishing, swimming, tubing, picnicking, and hiking. Bird-watching is another popular pursuit. Families also flock to the Guadalupe Canoe Livery, a favorite local spot for canoeing, wading, and enjoying the cool waters.
